Applications open for Tall Stories’ new Directing Storytelling Theatre course

Tall Stories has announced an exciting opportunity for theatre-makers and emerging directors with the launch of its new short course, Directing Storytelling Theatre, now open for applications.

Designed to introduce participants to the craft of directing storytelling theatre for families and young audiences, the course offers hands-on practical learning supported by Tall Stories’ experienced creative team.

Running across three consecutive Saturdays (31 January, 7 February and 14 February 2026), the course will take place from 10 am to 6 pm at the Tall Stories Studio in Islington.

A practical exploration of Storytelling Theatre

The programme will be led by Tall Stories’ Artistic Director, Toby Mitchell, together with members of the company and professional actors. Participants will explore a variety of source materials, from fiction and non-fiction books to scripts, before shaping them into scenes suitable for young people’s theatre.

Collaboration and idea-sharing are central to the course, giving attendees the chance to learn from each other while developing their skills in working with performers and crafting compelling stories on stage.

Who can apply?

The course is aimed at emerging directors aged 18 and over who have some prior experience in directing or assistant directing. No previous background in family or storytelling theatre is required, making this an accessible entry point for those keen to diversify their practice.

Of the eight available places, seven will be allocated through open applications, with the eighth reserved for a candidate recommended through Tall Stories’ wider artist development programmes.

Tall Stories emphasises its commitment to widening access and reducing barriers within the industry. The company particularly encourages applications from individuals whose backgrounds are underrepresented in the arts, including people from the global majority, carers and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Directors based in Islington and neighbouring North London boroughs are also warmly invited to apply.

Cost and support

The course is free to attend, and participants will also receive a £10 per day travel contribution for journeys within London. Additional travel support may be available for those travelling from outside the capital.
